ITT: we discuss the moon landing "hoax"

I think the number one reason not to believe the hoax theory is the USSR. The USSR definitely had the technology and spies they'd need to know whether or not it was a real moon mission and there is no way the USSR wouldn't have said anything if we had faked it.

How was it fake

>> No.3

we left mirrors on the moon thats proof enough

pics or it didn't happen

apparently the flag appears to be moving, and there is no atmosphere, and therefore no wind, on the moon. therefore; hoax. That is the opinion of my French teacher, not me.

OH SHI- ... lunar winds?

which are -what- exactly? if you can explain to me what a lunar wind is, in a way that doesn't sound like BS I might be able to change said crazy teacher's mind...

Lunar wind, I think I made it up, Solar wind however, would not be stopped by the fact the moon has no magnetic field, or atmosphere, could blow the flag. Solar wind is plasma escaping from the sun at high speeds, it causes aurorae, geomagnetic storms that cause some power outages, and the tails of comets (they point away from the sun). Could probably have blown the flag.
Also, if they wanted to stage the moon landing, they wouldn't have been so careless as to leave a door open in the studio, or dumb enough to set up a fan.

hmm possibly for the solar wind theory...

but as for your last pint, nothing looks more patriotic then an American flag swaying in the wind... apparently.

yeah, cold war, they still wouldn't be that dumb.

no offense but America does have a history of not being on the ball...

None taken, and your right. But still, gotta give 'em some credit. Theres a problem and the UN kinda goes hey US I think it's your turn. And the US is like "We did it last time... fine..." and trudges off.

I suppose that's right. are you American? I'm Canadian.

I was just reading a thread about this... I think on Space.com? Anyway, the hoax theories have been completely debunked. Among the notable hoax "evidence"...

  1. The flag appears to be waving.

The flag is not waving. There is not wind on the moon. That's why the dust in the videos flies up and then straight back down. There's a little horizontal bar on the flags they use in zero-G. When the astronauts went to extend the flag along the bar they didn't pull it out all the way so it ended up hanging with little folds in it, making it look a little bit like it was waving. Now astronauts always deploy the flag only partially so it looks like it's waving.

2. Identical Hills
Two sets of two pictures taken from completely different locations show the same hills in the bg. However NASA later made a press release correcting that info. The pictures were taken from only a few meters apart in one case, and in the other they were taken from much farther away but looking in the same direction. Because the moon has no atmostphere objects don't decrease in clarity depending on distance, thus the hills look nearly the same.

3. No objects left on the moon
Even with our strongest telescopes it would be impossible to pick out debris on the moon.

In fact... here's a good debunking site.

thank you. this should make for an interesting French class.

You're welcome. I find the physics behind space to be rather fascinating, especially the commonly held misconceptions. (Such as the moon looking larger on the horizon.)

would you happen to be able to explain why the full moon sometimes appears red? the legend is that those nights the Devil is beating his wife, but I obviously doubt that.

>> No.19

>>18
Well, if it's a Lunar Eclipse, it tends towards red because of the scattering effect of the atmosphere meaning the light most likely to get bent around via the atmosphere is towards the red end of the spectrum.

Otherwise, when are you seeing it red?

harvest moons generally appear to be red/orange and larger than normal

As an American, I have to say that the answer to all conspiracy theories is Watergate. Credit to Penn & Teller for pointing out that we can't even cover up a hotel break-in.

That's the dust in the air causing the light to refract differently

>The flag is not waving.

WRONG.

The flag IS waving, and you can tell it quite easily certain comparison shots. Because there is no atmosphere on the moon, movement in the flag caused a they stuck it into the ground would continue for a looong time. Also, the space suits vent air occaisionally which may have contributed, although not by much if at all.

Of course, this is all academic since the moon landings were filmed on a soundstage on Pluto.
